My Married Life: Allergic to Sperm?

Even though it sounds like a National Enquirer headline (albeit an R-rated version) this story is actually completely true. Julie Boyd dated her now-husband Mike for years. But it wasn't until their wedding night, when the couple first did the deed without a condom, that Boyd realized something was really, really wrong. Experts call the painful-sounding issue seminal plasma hypersensitivity -- which is just a fancy way of saying "sperm allergy" -- and say that it affects up to 40,000 American women.

This article did two things for me. One, it made me flinch and cross my legs. Duh. Two, it reminded me how much you can sometimes fool yourself into believing that you're really in charge of every little twist and turn in life -- you'll get married at such and such age, you'll have kids at such and such age (and yes, when I say you, I really mean me)...and then, one day, life turns around and wham! You're allergic to your husband's friggin’ sperm! Forget babies. Let's just focus on how not to be in horrible pain after every shag, shall we?

Bottom line: You just never know when life is going to throw you a sucker punch. Poor Julie (and Mike)!

Readers, have you ever head of anything like this? Or have any of you experienced anything like this?

Well, I clicked on your post to find answers to my own problem but since no one has commented yet I will talk with you. About a year ago my husband and I started having sex without condoms (I was on other BC) and I noticed that I had a burning type sensation after. This led to me not wanting sex as much and only about three months ago I said something to my husband (and only after I had searched the internet for answers). This is a really annoying problem and no it isn't that unusual. I found about a dozen websites that had many posts about the same issue. Those posts were hard to muddle through because most said it was an STD or an infection, but I knew 100% that that was not the case for me. We are now planning to start TTC (trying to conceive) this summer and I have no idea how we are going to get passed this. I mentioned the problem to my doctor last time I saw her and she kind of dismissed it. Hopefully when I see my OBG, she will have some kind of answer. But from what I read, the allergy is usually due to a kind of ph imbalance. There were several "home remedies" that sounded kind of weird (and I have not tried) but no one seemed to list any kind of medical relief and more often than not those ladies' doctors kept telling them it was an STD or infection. (I just took a moment to read the original story link and my situation is not that serious. It isn't a 10 on the pain chart for me, more like a 6. When I did finally tell my husband why I didn't want to have sex, he kind of laughed and said we could use condoms. It was like an A-DUH! moment :P and made me feel really stupid for not saying anything sooner.) Anyway, I hope this might help someone else who's afraid of speaking up.
